The Stanley Sclavos Fundraising Dinner 27th February 2002

A very special evening was held to support Stanley. It lifted the spirits of our family and the positive energy will strengthen us for our difficult period ahead. The following piece was written by Sunday Mail Writer Ken Lord and appeared in a full page feature in the Sunday Mail 3rd March 2002 edition

“The plight of a youngster stricken by illness touched hearts and loosened purse strings to inspiring levels. Ken Lord was moved by a momentous effort.

More than 750 sparklers swarmed into the West End Greek Club for the heart wrenching fundraiser of the month. The Stanley Sclavos Benefit raked in an awesome six-figure take to assist in the nine-year-old leukaemia victim’s desperate fight for life via a New York operation.

The night’s maestro, fresh produce prince Steve Vergotis, was made aware of Stanley’s plight two weeks ago.

Massive support came from the Greek community, Brisbane’s corporate and commercial world, mainstream city groovers, John Paul College (Stanley’s campus), sports luminaries and other humans who care.

I’m familiar with benefits of this nature but this one was doused in a warmth that eclipsed the cool of the glittering guests.

The Greek Club’s huge first-floor functions room was a sea of tables, and the absence of hype was a fresh as tomorrow.

No tricky décor, no smart-alec lollygagging, very little posing, and a sensational auction that busted national charity records!

Stanley Sclavos was there with his family, all of whom were misty-eyed. And who wasn’t?”
